A question Jesus asked
Why are you afraid?
What Jesus was really asking
A storm swamps the boat while Jesus sleeps. The disciples wake Him in a panic, and after He calms the wind and sea He asks, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? He is not scolding them for feeling fear in a sinking boat. He is pointing to what fear had made them forget: that He was in the boat with them.
How the question still finds us
Fear tells us we are alone with the storm and the worst is certain. Jesus' question reframes it: not, is the storm real, but, who is with you in it? He does not always still the wind the moment we ask. But the question invites us to remember that the One who can speak to storms has not abandoned the boat.
Sit with it

He is still asking
