A question Jesus asked

Could you not watch with me one hour?

“And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?”Matthew 26:40 · In the garden of Gethsemane

What Jesus was really asking

In His deepest anguish, sweating as He prays, Jesus asks His closest friends to stay awake with Him, and they fall asleep. He returns and asks, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? It is one of the most human moments in the Gospels: God in the flesh, longing simply for company in the dark.

How the question still finds us

The question runs both ways. He knows what it is to want someone near and be met with absence, so He understands your loneliness from the inside. And He still asks us to keep watch with Him, to give Him our attention in a world designed to keep us asleep and distracted. He does not need our help. He wants our company.

Sit with it

When did you last simply stay with Jesus, unhurried, giving Him your attention for even one hour?

Lord, You know what it is to be left alone. Keep me awake to You. Help me watch with You, and trust that You watch with me. Amen.

He is still asking

Jesus is not only someone people debate. He is someone who asks, and waits for your answer. You can answer Him now.
