What Jesus was really asking
Jesus first asks who the crowds say He is, and the disciples report the rumors. Then He turns it personal: But whom say ye that I am? It is the hinge of the Gospels. Everything depends less on what people in general think of Jesus and more on the answer each person gives. Peter answers, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
How the question still finds us
You can admire Jesus, study Him, quote Him, and still never answer His actual question. He does not finally ask what the culture thinks, or what your family raised you to think. He asks you. The question is an honor and a weight: He wants your answer, not a borrowed one, and He is willing to wait for it.
Sit with it
Not who you were taught to say, not who others say, but you: who do you say that Jesus is?
He is still asking
