What Jesus was really asking
Right after calling His followers to take up their cross, Jesus asks the question that measures every ambition: For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? It is not against success; it is a question of exchange rate. What good is winning everything if you lose the self that was supposed to enjoy it?
How the question still finds us
We live inside a machine built to make us want more and never ask this question. Jesus asks it plainly. He is not shaming achievement; He is refusing to let us trade our souls for it without noticing. The most successful life, by every outward measure, can still be a bad bargain. He asks us to count the real cost before we pay it.
