From Fear to Faith
Fear → the storm → "Why are you afraid?" → trust in Christ
Fear tells you that you are alone and the worst is certain. Scripture does not scold the fear; it walks you, step by step, out of it, toward the One who is in the boat with you.
Walk the path
When I am afraid
Psalm 56:3“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
Notice it does not say if, but when. Fear and trust can share the same breath; you can be scared and still lean on God.
Fear not, for I am with you
Isaiah 41:10“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
The cure for fear here is not a pep talk but a Presence: I am with you, I will strengthen you, I will hold you up.
Why are you afraid?
Mark 4:40“And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”
Jesus stills the storm, then asks the disciples why they feared. Not because fear in a sinking boat is strange, but because they forgot He was in it with them.
Not a spirit of fear
2 Timothy 1:7“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
The gripping, shrinking fear is not from God. He gives power, love, and a sound mind in its place.
Perfect love casts out fear
1 John 4:18“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
Fear shrinks in the presence of love. The more you know you are truly loved by God, the less power fear holds.
Where the path arrives: Jesus
Fear's whole lie is that you are alone with the storm. The path out is not pretending the storm is small; it is discovering who is in the boat. Jesus does not always still the wind the moment we ask, but He is never asleep to us in the way fear whispers. Faith is not the absence of fear; it is turning, while afraid, to the One who spoke to the sea and it obeyed. He asks, gently, why are you afraid, and the answer He is waiting to give you is Himself.
