What the silence means

We rush from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, and in doing so we skip the strangest day of all: Saturday. On that day, Jesus is dead, sealed in a borrowed tomb behind a great stone. The disciples are scattered and shattered; the one they had staked everything on is a corpse. Whatever they had believed about him seems buried with him. And heaven says nothing. There is no angel yet, no earthquake, no word of hope. There is only the long, silent grief of a day when God is, quite literally, in the grave.

Holy Saturday is the day for everyone whose hope has died and whose Sunday has not yet come. It is worth sitting with, because most of the life of faith is lived not on Friday's grief or Sunday's joy but in Saturday's silence, the ache of the in-between, when the loss is real and the resurrection is not yet visible. The disciples did not know Sunday was coming. From inside the silence, it felt like the end. It was not. God was not absent that Saturday. He was working in the dark, in the tomb, on a resurrection no one could see coming.
