What the silence means

Herod is thrilled to finally meet Jesus. He has heard the stories and hopes to see a trick, 'some miracle done by him,' the way one might hope a famous performer will do their signature act. He peppers Jesus with questions. And Jesus, who spoke tenderly to prostitutes and lepers and thieves, who answered the sincere questions of Pharisees and the desperate cries of beggars, says to this powerful, curious king exactly nothing. Not one word.

It is worth asking why. Jesus was never silent toward honest seeking, however broken. But Herod did not want a Savior; he wanted a show. He was curious about Jesus the way people are curious about a spectacle, from a safe distance, entertained, uncommitted, wanting a sign that would cost him nothing. And to that posture, heaven had nothing to say. The silence was itself the answer: God does not perform on demand for the merely curious.
