Is there proof that God exists?

The short answer

There is no mathematical proof of God, and honesty requires admitting that, but there is substantial evidence that makes belief reasonable. The universe had a beginning and is finely tuned for life, we experience morality as objectively real, and human consciousness and longing are hard to explain by matter alone. These are pointers rather than a courtroom verdict, and Christians hold that the strongest evidence is the person and resurrection of Jesus.

It helps to be clear about words. Proof in the strict sense belongs to mathematics and logic; almost nothing else in life, including the existence of other minds or the reliability of history, is proven that way. What we have for the biggest questions is evidence, and here the evidence is considerable.

The pointers, briefly

The universe began to exist and did not have to; it is delicately calibrated so that life is even possible; and it is rationally intelligible, as if made by a mind. Alongside the cosmos, our inner life points the same way: we cannot live as though cruelty and kindness are merely matters of taste. That deep sense of real good and evil fits a moral Maker.

Scripture treats the evidence as genuinely available to anyone willing to look, not hidden from the sincere. It also insists that God is not merely the conclusion of an argument but someone who wants to be known.

It comes back to Jesus

The Christian claim is that God did not leave us to guess. He entered our world in Jesus, lived a life we can examine, and rose from the dead as public evidence. If you are looking for proof, the most promising place to look is not the sky in the abstract but the empty tomb and the man it belonged to.
