Is it too late to turn to God?

The short answer

It is not too late. As long as you are alive to ask the question, the door is open. The Bible is full of people who turned to God late, after wasted years or terrible failures, and were welcomed without reproach. God is not reluctant or slow to forgive; Scripture says he is patient precisely because he wants no one to be lost. However far you have gone, the way back is one honest turning.

The fear behind this question is that you have used up your chances, that grace has an expiry date, or that God keeps a ledger too full to reopen. The Bible answers that fear directly, and its answer is astonishing.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9

The man who came at the very last hour

When Jesus was crucified, a criminal dying beside him turned to him in his final minutes, with nothing to offer and no time left to prove himself. He simply asked to be remembered. Jesus did not tell him he was too late.

“And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
Luke 23:42-43

If a man could be received at the last hour of his life, with a wasted past behind him, then the door is not shut to you. Late is not the same as too late. A turning is never wasted.

It comes back to Jesus

Jesus once told a story about a son who ran away, spent everything, and came home expecting to be treated as a servant, only to find his father running down the road to meet him. That father is the picture of God. You do not have to crawl back in shame. You only have to turn, and you will find him already coming toward you.
