Grief and loss

I Miss My Dad

Missing your dad can show up as a strange quiet, the absence of a voice you did not know you leaned on so much. You do not have to be the strong one now. The Christian faith makes room for your grief, and holds out a hope that the loss is not final.

Maybe he was your steady place, or maybe it was complicated, and you are grieving both what was and what never got to be. Both are real. There is no version of missing your dad that is not allowed here.

You do not have to have it together. Whatever your relationship was, the ache of his absence is honest, and you can bring it just as it is.

A hope for the fatherless place

The Bible gives a name to God that speaks straight into this: a Father to the fatherless. When your own father is gone, that is not an empty comfort. It is an invitation.

“A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.”
Psalm 68:5
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”
John 11:25-26
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Revelation 21:4

Christians believe that because Jesus rose, death does not get the last word over those who are his. We will not claim to know God's verdict on your father, that is his alone. But we can point you to the hope we hold: a God who calls himself Father to the fatherless, and who has promised a day with no more death and no more tears.

One small step: if there is something you never got to say to him, you can still say it to God, who hears. And you do not have to sit in the quiet alone tonight; you can ask someone to pray with you.

A short prayer

God, you call yourself a Father to the fatherless. I need that to be true tonight. I miss my dad. Be near to me, and let me feel that I am not alone. Amen.

You do not have to carry this alone

Before Jesus did anything at the grave of his friend, he wept with the ones who loved him. He is not far off from grief, and he is not in a hurry to move you past it. If you want, you can read the story for yourself, or simply let someone pray with you tonight. You do not need the right words. You only need to come.

Questions people ask

Why does missing my dad still hit me out of nowhere?
Grief comes in waves, often triggered by a smell, a song, or a moment you wanted to share with him. This is normal and can continue for years. The waves usually come less often over time, but they are not a sign you are doing it wrong.
What does the Bible say to someone who lost their father?
It calls God 'a father of the fatherless' (Psalm 68:5) and 'nigh unto them that are of a broken heart' (Psalm 34:18). Scripture does not rush your grief; it meets you in it and offers God's own nearness.
Will I see my dad again?
The Christian hope is resurrection and reunion for those in Christ. We offer that hope while entrusting your father to a God kinder and wiser than we are, rather than pronouncing on his eternal state, which we cannot know.
