Grief and loss

Will I See Them Again?

This is the question grief asks in the dark. The honest Christian answer is a hope, not a guarantee about a particular person we cannot know: that because Jesus rose from the dead, death is not the end for those who are his, and there is a reunion promised beyond it.

If you are asking this, you are missing someone terribly, and you want the truth, not a comforting lie. We respect that. You deserve honesty about what Christians actually hope, and why.

It is a good and human longing to want to see them again. That ache to be reunited is not naive. It runs all the way through the Christian story.

What Christians actually hope, and why

The center of the Christian faith is that Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised bodily to life. That event is the ground of every Christian hope about death.

“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”
John 11:25-26
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
“In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
John 14:2-3
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Revelation 21:4

So the Christian hope of reunion is real, and it is anchored in the resurrection of Jesus. But we want to be honest with you, because honesty is its own kind of comfort: this hope is held out to those who trust Christ, and no person, and no website, can pronounce a final verdict on the eternal state of any particular soul. That belongs to God alone, who is more merciful and more just than any of us. What we can tell you is where the hope is anchored, and invite you to bring your longing, and your loved one, to him.

One small step: read Jesus' own words about it in John 11, where he stands at a grave and says, "I am the resurrection, and the life." Then bring your longing honestly to God in prayer.

A short prayer

Jesus, you said you are the resurrection and the life. I want to believe that. I want to see them again. Help my unbelief, and hold the one I love in your mercy. Amen.

You do not have to carry this alone

Before Jesus did anything at the grave of his friend, he wept with the ones who loved him. He is not far off from grief, and he is not in a hurry to move you past it. If you want, you can read the story for yourself, or simply let someone pray with you tonight. You do not need the right words. You only need to come.

Questions people ask

Will I really see my loved one again?
The Christian hope is that death is not the end for those who belong to Christ, and that there is a reunion beyond it (1 Thessalonians 4:14; John 14:3). We offer that hope honestly, without claiming to know God's verdict on any one person.
How can Christians be sure there is life after death?
The confidence rests on the resurrection of Jesus, which Christians hold to be a historical event witnessed by many. Jesus rising is treated as the firstfruits and the promise that his people will rise too (1 Corinthians 15:20).
What if I am not sure my loved one believed?
We understand that fear, and we will not pretend to answers we do not have. We entrust every person to a God who is kinder and more just than we are, and we encourage you to bring that very worry to him in prayer.
