How to Repent

Repentance is not groveling or self-punishment; it is a turning, away from what harms you and back toward God. Far from bad news, it is the doorway home.

  1. See it honestly

Repentance begins with telling the truth about what is wrong, without excuses and without despair. Honesty is the first step home.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.”1 John 1:9, King James Version

  2. Turn, do not just feel bad

Regret alone is not repentance. The heart of it is turning: a change of direction, away from sin and toward God.

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.”Acts 3:19, King James Version

  3. Come to God with confidence, not fear

You do not turn back to an angry God but to a Father who is already running to meet you. Come as you are.

“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father ... ran, and fell on his neck.”Luke 15:20, King James Version

  4. Receive His forgiveness fully

When God forgives, He truly removes the wrong. Do not keep carrying what He has already taken away.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”Psalm 103:12, King James Version

  5. Walk in a new direction

Repentance bears fruit in changed steps. With God's help, begin to walk the new way, and begin again whenever you stumble.

“Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance.”Matthew 3:8, King James Version

The One who makes this possible: Jesus

Jesus began His message with a call to repent, not to shame people but to invite them home. He is the One who makes repentance safe, because He has already paid for the very sins you are turning from. Repentance is not how you earn His love; it is simply how you turn to receive it, and there is joy in heaven each time you do.

You are not meant to carry this alone. You can ask someone to pray with you, find people near you, or, if you would like a gentle place to begin, start with Jesus here.

Common questions

What does it mean to repent?

To repent is to change direction: to turn away from sin and back toward God. It is more than feeling sorry; it is a turning of the heart and life. Far from a punishment, it is the doorway home to a God who welcomes you.

How do I truly repent?

See your sin honestly, turn from it rather than only regretting it, come to God with confidence in His mercy, receive His forgiveness fully, and begin to walk a new direction with His help. When you stumble, simply turn again; He is always ready to receive you.

Is repentance a one-time thing?

You turn to Christ decisively at the start, but repentance also becomes a daily posture of turning back to God whenever you drift. It is not about perfect streaks but a heart that keeps returning to the Father who keeps welcoming you.
