How to Forgive Someone

Forgiving someone who hurt you can feel impossible, and it is rarely quick. Forgiveness does not mean the wrong was okay; it means releasing the debt so bitterness no longer rules you.

  1. Be honest about the hurt

Forgiveness does not pretend nothing happened. Name the wrong truthfully; you can only release what you have honestly faced.

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.”Psalm 55:22, King James Version

  2. Choose to release the debt

Forgiveness is a decision before it is a feeling. Choose to hand the offense to God rather than demand payment.

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another ... even as Christ forgave you.”Colossians 3:13, King James Version

  3. Remember how much you have been forgiven

Grace received flows into grace given. Recalling God's mercy toward you softens your heart toward the one who wronged you.

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”Ephesians 4:32, King James Version

  4. Give the justice to God

You do not have to be judge and jury. Entrust the wrong to God, who sees all and judges rightly.

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves ... for it is written, Vengeance is mine.”Romans 12:19, King James Version

  5. Forgive again as often as needed

Forgiveness is often a process, not a single moment. When the pain resurfaces, forgive again, as many times as it takes.

“I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”Matthew 18:22, King James Version

The One who makes this possible: Jesus

The power to forgive comes from having been forgiven. At the cross Jesus paid the debt for every wrong, and even prayed for those who crucified Him. He does not command you to do what He has not first done for you. As you receive His forgiveness, He gives you the grace to release others, and to be free.

You are not meant to carry this alone. You can ask someone to pray with you, find people near you, or, if you would like a gentle place to begin, start with Jesus here.

Common questions

How do I forgive someone who really hurt me?

Be honest about the hurt, then choose to release the debt to God rather than demand payment, remembering how much you have been forgiven. Give the justice to God, and forgive again whenever the pain resurfaces. It is often a process, not a single moment.

Does forgiving mean I have to trust them again or stay in a harmful situation?

No. Forgiveness releases the offense and frees your heart from bitterness; it does not require restoring trust instantly or remaining in danger. You can forgive someone while still setting wise boundaries and seeking safety and help.

What if I do not feel like forgiving?

Forgiveness is a decision before it is a feeling. You can choose to release the debt even while the emotions lag behind, asking God for help. As you keep choosing it, He softens the heart over time.
