How to Overcome Fear with Scripture

Fear tells you that you are alone and that everything depends on you. God's Word answers both lies. Here is how to meet fear with Scripture and find courage that holds.

  1. Name the fear and bring it to God

Do not hide your fear or fight it in secret. Tell God plainly what you are afraid of and hand it to Him.

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”Psalm 56:3, King James Version

  2. Answer fear with God's presence

The antidote to fear is not positive thinking but God's nearness. Preach His presence to your anxious heart.

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.”Isaiah 41:10, King James Version

  3. Fill your mind with His Word

Replace the loop of worry with the truth of Scripture. Memorize a verse and return to it whenever fear rises.

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.”Isaiah 26:3, King James Version

  4. Remember His perfect love

God's love casts out fear. The more you know how deeply He loves you, the less power fear has over you.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.”1 John 4:18, King James Version

  5. Take the next step in courage

Courage is not the absence of fear but doing the right thing with God beside you. Take one step, trusting Him.

“Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid ... for the LORD thy God is with thee.”Joshua 1:9, King James Version

The One who makes this possible: Jesus

Again and again Jesus told frightened people, fear not, and He backs those words with His presence. He faced the darkest night so you would never be alone in yours. When fear rises, you can lean on the One who conquered death itself, and He promises to be with you always.

You are not meant to carry this alone. You can ask someone to pray with you, find people near you, or, if you would like a gentle place to begin, start with Jesus here.
