Getting the Right Help
Different kinds of trouble need different kinds of help, and it is wise to reach for the right one. Pastoral and spiritual support, professional counseling, medical care, and emergency services each do something the others cannot. Faith does not replace medical or professional help, it walks alongside it. If someone is in danger right now, call 911.
Four kinds of help, and when each fits
- Emergency services. If someone is in immediate danger, seriously hurt, or at risk of harm right now, call 911. This comes before everything else. For a mental health crisis or thoughts of self-harm, call or text 988.
- Medical care. For illness, injury, medication, or any physical health concern, see a doctor, a clinic, or a hospital. Faith is not a substitute for medical treatment.
- Professional counseling. For depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, or ongoing mental health needs, a licensed counselor or therapist is trained to help. The SAMHSA Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, can refer you.
- Pastoral and spiritual support. A pastor, chaplain, or faith community can offer prayer, presence, encouragement, and meaning. This is precious, and it is meant to walk alongside professional and medical care, never to replace it.
Spiritual care and professional care belong together
These are not competing choices. A person can pray and see a doctor. A person can lean on their church and work with a licensed counselor. In fact, that is usually the healthiest path. Anyone who tells you that faith alone should replace medicine or professional treatment is not speaking wisdom or love. God often brings healing through the skill of doctors, the training of counselors, and the care of a community, all at once.
Local churches and ministries often help too
Many local churches and Christian ministries quietly provide food, clothing, and practical assistance to anyone who asks, no strings attached. In the Living Bread app you can look for verified serve and refuge listings near you, places that have been checked, so you can reach out with confidence. However you find help, the goal is simply that your need is met.
And if you would like someone to pray with you, quietly and with no pressure, you are welcome to ask for prayer here. It is free, and you can stay anonymous.
You are welcome here, whenever you are ready
There is no fee and no catch. Get the help you need first. And if one day you grow curious about the One who taught his people to feed the hungry and welcome the stranger, you can come and see for yourself, gently, in your own time. No pressure, ever.

Frequently asked questions
- Does faith replace medical or professional help?
- No. Spiritual care and professional care are not rivals. Faith can bring comfort and hope, but it does not replace a doctor, a licensed counselor, or emergency services. The wisest path is usually both together.
- When should I call 911 instead of a helpline?
- Call 911 whenever someone is in immediate physical danger, seriously injured, or at imminent risk of harm. Helplines like 988 are for crisis support and guidance, but life-threatening emergencies need 911.
- Can I get both prayer and professional help?
- Yes, and often you should. Many people find strength in prayer and a faith community while also seeing a doctor or licensed counselor. Spiritual care and professional care work well side by side.
