There is a place for you

Faith After Divorce

Yes, there is a place for you. Divorce is a grief, and it can carry shame that the church has sometimes made heavier instead of lighter. But Jesus met a woman with a tangled marriage history and offered her living water rather than condemnation. You are not disqualified. You are not beyond his reach.

If this is you

Divorce is a kind of grief, the loss of a future you once counted on, sometimes tangled with anger, relief, guilt, or all of them at once. On top of that, you may carry a fear that church is the last place you can go now, that people are quietly judging, that you have failed in a way that cannot be forgiven. That fear is understandable. It is also not the heart of God toward you.

Jesus did not turn away the hurting

At a well in Samaria, Jesus spoke with a woman who had had five husbands and was living with a man who was not her husband. He knew all of it. He did not lecture her or send her away. He offered her living water, and she became one of the first to tell her town about him.

“Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
John 4:13-14
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee.”
Isaiah 43:2

An honest word

Faith will not undo what happened or erase the grief, and it will not promise that everything now works out neatly. What it does say is that your marriage does not define your standing with God, that his mercy is not rationed, and that a new beginning is possible. Some churches have handled divorce badly; that is a failure of people, not a verdict from God. Look for a community that leads with grace, and let yourself be carried for a while.

Come and see

You do not have to clean yourself up first, or have the words, or feel any particular way. The living Christ welcomed people exactly where they were, and he still does. You are invited to come as you are and see for yourself. The Gospel of John is a gentle place to begin, and it asks nothing of you but a little quiet and an honest look.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still be a Christian after divorce?
Yes. Divorce does not put anyone outside the love or forgiveness of God. Christians hold that God's mercy covers our brokenness, including in marriage, and that no failure is beyond his grace. You are not disqualified.
Will a church judge me for being divorced?
Some have, wrongly, and if that has happened to you, it was a failure of people and not the heart of Christ. Many churches lead with grace and welcome divorced people fully. It is worth finding one that does.
I feel so much shame. Where do I start?
Start by knowing you are not beyond his reach. You might read the story of the woman at the well in John 4, or simply ask someone to pray with you. If the weight feels too heavy to carry alone, please reach out for help.
