Faith
Faith is confident trust in God and in what He has said, even about things we cannot yet see (Hebrews 11:1). It is not blind or irrational; it rests on the character and promises of a trustworthy God, and it grows as we hear and dwell on His Word (Romans 10:17). The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8), and that faith is meant to shape how we live every day.
Key verses about faith
What Jesus taught about faith
Jesus marveled at great faith and grieved little faith. He said faith like a grain of mustard seed could move mountains (Matthew 17:20), and He met an honest, struggling father's cry, 'And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.' (Mark 9:24), not with rebuke but with compassion. He called Peter to walk to Him on the water, and when Peter began to sink, He caught him. Faith is not the absence of fear; it is reaching for Jesus in the middle of it.
Examples of faith in the Bible
- Noah built an ark for a flood no one had seen, moved by faith (Hebrews 11:7).
- Rahab risked her life on the God of Israel and was saved (Hebrews 11:31).
- The centurion believed Jesus could heal with only a word, and Jesus marveled at his faith (Matthew 8).
- The four friends tore open a roof to lower a paralyzed man to Jesus, and He saw their faith (Mark 2).
- The bleeding woman believed if she could just touch His garment she would be healed, and she was (Mark 5).
How to grow in faith, practically
- Feed your faith on God's Word; 'faith cometh by hearing... the word of God' (Romans 10:17).
- Pray honestly, doubts and all. God is not afraid of your questions.
- Act on what you do believe. Faith grows in obedience, not in waiting for certainty.
- Remember God's past faithfulness to you and to His people.
- Walk with other believers whose faith can carry you when yours is thin.
- Ask God plainly to increase your faith. He loves to answer that prayer.
