I Am Dying. A narrow luminous path leading toward a great light.

Hope that outlasts death

I Am Dying

John 14:3

If you know that your time is short, and you have come here in the middle of it, then let this page be a quiet, steady voice beside you: you are not alone, you are not forgotten, and there is real hope even now. You do not need the strength to search or strive; you only need to be held, and there is One reaching for you. Jesus said to those He loved as He faced His own death, Let not your heart be troubled, and then, In my Father's house are many mansions, I go to prepare a place for you. He is not describing a void. He is describing a home, prepared, with room kept for you.

“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”John 14:2

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”John 14:3

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”Psalm 23:4

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,”Romans 8:38

Let's be honest and tender about this

Let us be gentle and honest together. Dying can be frightening, and it can also be strangely peaceful; both can be true, sometimes in the same day. You may feel ready one hour and terrified the next, grieved to leave the people you love, unsure what waits. All of that is human, and none of it is failure. If you can, let the people who love you be near, and let the chaplains, nurses, and hospice caregivers do what they are there for, easing your body so your heart is freer. And if there is anything left unsaid, a love to speak, a forgiveness to give or ask, this is a good and holy time to say it. You do not have to tie every thread. You only have to be carried, and you are.

The deeper hope

For those who belong to Jesus, dying is not a leap into the dark but a step into a prepared place. And if I go and prepare a place for you, He said, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Death does not get the final word over your relationships or your self; the deepest you goes on, and goes to Him. Neither death, nor life, Scripture insists, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. That is the ground beneath you now. Whatever is slipping from your hands, His hold on you is not slipping. You are being received, not lost.

The One who defeated death

The Lord you are going to meet is not a stranger and not a judge waiting to catch you out; He is the Shepherd who has been walking the valley beside you the whole time. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me. He walked His own death ahead of you so that yours would not be a road no one has traveled. And to a dying man beside Him who simply asked to be remembered, He said at once, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. That is how ready He is to receive you. You do not need eloquent words or a perfect life. You need only turn your heart to Him, and He is already turning toward you.

Who is Jesus? · Begin with Jesus · Ask someone to pray with you

Lord Jesus, I am at the end of my strength, and I turn to You. Thank You that You have prepared a place and that You come to receive Your own. Take my fear and hold me close. Nothing can separate me from Your love, so keep me in it now. Remember me, and receive me to Yourself. Into Your hands I commit myself. Amen.

Questions people ask

I am dying and I am scared. What do I do right now?

Turn your heart toward Jesus, even wordlessly, and let people near you help carry this, family, a chaplain, hospice caregivers. You do not need strength or eloquence; you need only to be received, and Jesus is reaching for you. If you can, ask someone to sit with you, hold your hand, and pray. You were never meant to face this hour alone.

Is it too late to make things right with God?

No. It is never too late. Jesus received a dying criminal who simply turned to Him in his final hours and promised him paradise that same day. If you turn to Christ now, honestly, He will not turn you away. You do not have to fix your life first; you come as you are, and He receives you.

What should I do with the time I have left?

If you are able, say the things love wants to say, speak forgiveness and blessing, and let those near you be present. And settle your heart with God. You do not have to resolve everything; leave what you cannot finish in His hands. This can be a tender, holy time, not only a fearful one, especially when you are not walking through it alone.
