Meet Jesus First, Church Later

If church or religion has hurt you, you do not have to start there. You can meet Jesus himself first, apart from any institution, and let community come later, when and if it feels safe. Christ is not the same as the people who wounded you in his name. He was often hardest on the religious and gentlest with the hurting. You are safe to come to him directly.

You can read here privately. You do not have to change your identity, tell anyone what you believe, or create an account. Nothing is asked of you, and nothing is decided today. You are simply welcome to come and see who Jesus is.

Christ is not the ones who hurt you

Some people carry deep wounds from church, from religious leaders, or from those who used God’s name to control or to harm. If that is you, your caution is understood, and it is not held against you. You do not have to walk back into any building or any group to look at Jesus.

It matters that Jesus himself was often hardest on the religious powerful, and gentlest with the wounded, the outsider, and the one everyone else had written off. The people who hurt you in his name were not showing you him.

Come to him directly

You can meet Jesus one to one, in his own words, with no institution in between. Read how he actually treated people. Watch who he defended and who he confronted. You may find that the Jesus of the Gospels is very different from what was done to you in his name.

Community, real and gentle, can come later, when you are ready and when it is safe. It does not have to come first, and it never has to come at the cost of your safety.

Do I have to join a church or sign up?

No. You can meet Jesus himself first, with no account and no group to join. Community is something for later, if and when it feels safe. It is never the price of coming to Christ.

Church hurt me. Can I still come to Jesus?

Yes. Jesus is not the same as the people who wounded you in his name. He was often hardest on religious leaders who burdened others (Matthew 23:4) and gentlest with the hurting (Matthew 11:28). You are safe to come to him directly.

What if I never feel safe with a church again?

You can know and follow Jesus while you heal, on your own, for as long as you need. Christians believe he meets each person personally. Any wider community is a gift, never a demand, and never worth your safety.
