You can be honest

Can I be angry with God?

Yes, you can be angry with God. The Bible not only allows it, it records it, again and again, without condemnation. The people closest to God were often the ones who argued with him most honestly. Anger brought to God is a form of keeping faith, not abandoning it.

You were taught, maybe, that good believers do not question God, that anger toward him is dangerous or forbidden. So when the anger came, you added guilt on top of grief, afraid that feeling this way proves your faith is failing. Now you are carrying both the pain and the shame of the pain.

What is true

Read the Psalms of lament, nearly a third of the whole book, and you hear believers crying why, how long, where are you. Job protested to God through forty chapters. Even Jesus, dying, cried my God, why hast thou forsaken me, quoting a psalm of anguish. If honest anguish flung at God were forbidden, none of these would be in Scripture. They are there precisely to give you permission, and language, for exactly what you feel.

What Jesus said, and did

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me... I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not.”
Psalm 22:1-2
“O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear!”
Habakkuk 1:2
“But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.”
Lamentations 3:32

One small step

Your one small step: give yourself permission the Bible already gives you. Pray a psalm of lament as your own, or write your own raw version to God. Let the anger be spoken, not stuffed down.

If you want to pray

God, I have been afraid that my anger at you was forbidden. But your own book is full of people crying out to you in pain. So I will too. Here is my honest heart. Amen.

Honest questions

Is being angry with God a lack of faith?
No. Bringing anger to God keeps you in relationship with him. The Psalms and Job show honest lament as part of faith, not the failure of it. Walking away in silence would be the greater danger.
Did anyone in the Bible get angry with God?
Yes, often. The Psalmists, Job, Jeremiah, Habakkuk, and others voiced raw anger and confusion to God. Even Jesus cried out in anguish from the cross, quoting Psalm 22.
What should I do with anger toward God?
Speak it to him honestly rather than burying it or leaving. Praying the laments of Scripture can give words to your anger and keep the conversation open, which is where healing tends to begin.

There is no rush

You do not have to decide anything today. You can read a little, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.
