Who made the BSB and when

The Berean Bible grew out of the Bible Hub project, which gathered original language tools and parallel texts online. Its translators produced the Berean Study Bible and the Berean Literal Bible, and refined the work into the Berean Standard Bible. In 2023 they placed the text in the public domain by dedication, a rare decision among contemporary translations.

Because a translation in the public domain can be freely reused, the BSB has become a favorite of developers, churches, and ministries who want a modern English Bible with no license barrier. It is one of the texts our own stored shelf holds and quotes verbatim.

How the BSB translates

The BSB aims to be accurate to the original while readable in current English. It draws on the Hebrew Masoretic text, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and a critical Greek New Testament, with moderate literalism that never turns stiff.

Readability and typical use

Clear and comfortable for adults, with short to medium sentences and standard modern vocabulary. It is easy to follow in the epistles.

Strengths

Free to quote, modern, and balanced. It makes an excellent baseline translation on a site or an AI answer where licensed texts are not available.

Cautions, stated fairly

It is newer, so fewer printed study resources are built around it than around the NIV or ESV. Its fame comes from its freedom more than a long church history.

Familiar renderings, in our own words

Because it is public domain, we can place its verses beside the King James Version and the World English Bible, which shows how English has moved in four centuries.

A few verses in the Berean Standard Bible

Because this text is in the public domain, here are two well known passages read word for word from our stored copy. Notice the sound of the English and compare it with the other translations.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
