A Bible reading plan for

Holy Week

8 days, Palm Sunday to Easter

Holy Week is the most important week in history, the days from Jesus' triumphal entry to His cross and resurrection. This eight-day plan walks you through it one Gospel passage a day, from Palm Sunday to Easter morning, so you can follow Jesus step by step through the week that changed everything.

“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”John 19:30 (KJV)

The plan, day by day

  1. Palm Sunday

    Matthew 21

Jesus enters Jerusalem to shouts of Hosanna, the humble King on a donkey, coming to His city to die and to reign.

  2. Monday

    Mark 11

Jesus cleanses the temple, driving out what had corrupted His Father's house, a house of prayer for all nations.

  3. Tuesday

    Matthew 24

On the Mount of Olives, Jesus teaches about the end and calls His followers to watchfulness and readiness.

  4. Wednesday

    Matthew 26

The plot to betray Him forms, and a woman anoints Him for burial. The shadow of the cross draws near.

  5. Maundy Thursday

    John 13

At the last supper, Jesus washes His disciples' feet and gives the new commandment: love one another as I have loved you.

  6. Good Friday

    John 19

The trial, the cross, and the words, It is finished. The Lamb of God gives His life for the world.

  7. Holy Saturday

    Luke 23

Jesus is laid in the tomb. A day of waiting and grief, and of trusting God in the silence before dawn.

  8. Easter Sunday

    John 20

The stone is rolled away and Jesus is risen. Death is defeated, and everything is made new. He is alive.

A reading plan is a servant, not a master. If you miss days there is no guilt here and no scorecard in heaven. Simply begin again where you left off. The goal was never to finish a list but to meet the One these words are about, Jesus, who is glad to be found by you today.

Where this plan is leading

Everything in the Christian faith gathers to this week. Here Jesus, the true Passover Lamb, lays down His life for the sins of the world and rises again in victory over death. Walk these eight days slowly and prayerfully, and let the wonder of it land afresh: He did this for you. It is finished, and He is risen, and because He lives, you can too.

Questions people ask

What is Holy Week?

Holy Week is the final week of Jesus' life, from His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday through His crucifixion on Good Friday to His resurrection on Easter Sunday. Christians remember it as the most significant week in history, when Jesus accomplished salvation through His death and rose again in victory over death.

How do I read the Bible during Holy Week?

Follow the events of the week day by day in the Gospels, as this plan does, from the triumphal entry through the last supper, the cross, and the empty tomb. Reading one passage a day lets you walk with Jesus through the week slowly and prayerfully, arriving at the joy of the resurrection on Easter morning.

What happened on each day of Holy Week?

Broadly: Palm Sunday, the triumphal entry; Monday, the cleansing of the temple; Tuesday, teaching in the temple and on the Mount of Olives; Wednesday, the plot and anointing; Thursday, the last supper; Friday, the crucifixion; Saturday, Jesus in the tomb; and Sunday, the resurrection. This plan gives a Gospel reading for each.
