Are miracles possible?

The short answer

Yes, if God exists. A miracle is not a violation of nature so much as the Maker of nature acting freely within it, the way an author can write an unexpected turn into a story. The only way to rule miracles out in advance is to assume there is no God, which is the very thing in question. So the real issue is not whether miracles can happen but whether the evidence for a particular one, above all the resurrection of Jesus, is good.

People sometimes say miracles are impossible because they break the laws of nature. But the laws of nature describe what normally happens when nothing outside the system intervenes. They do not forbid the one who set up the system from acting. If there is a God who made the natural order, then his acting within it is not a contradiction; it is exactly what you would expect to be possible.

The honest question

So the question shifts from the abstract to the specific. Not can any miracle ever occur, but did this one happen. That is a matter of evidence and testimony, weighed like any historical claim. To dismiss every miracle report in advance is not open-minded; it quietly assumes the conclusion that God does not act.

The Bible does not treat miracles as magic tricks. They are signs, pointing beyond themselves to God's character and kingdom, most of all in Jesus healing the sick and raising the dead as a preview of the world he came to mend.

The central Christian miracle is the resurrection, and it is offered not as a story to accept blindly but as an event to examine. If Jesus rose, then miracles are not only possible, one of them changed history. That is the claim worth weighing before deciding what can and cannot happen.
