The Donkey
The donkey is the humble beast of burden that carries kings without pomp. In one of prophecy's most tender surprises, Israel's Messiah comes not on a war horse but riding lowly on a donkey.

The creature in Scripture. The donkey, or ass, was the ordinary working animal of the common people, used for riding, carrying loads, and farm work, and it appears from Genesis onward. Abraham saddles his ass to travel to Moriah (Genesis 22:3). One of the strangest scenes in the Bible is Balaam's donkey, which sees the angel of the LORD blocking the road and, when beaten, is given speech: "the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?" (Numbers 22:28). Donkeys marked wealth and peace rather than war; kings and judges rode them in times of peace, as when the sons of the judges rode "on thirty ass colts" (Judges 10:4). Because horses were associated with armies, a ruler on a donkey signaled that he came in peace.
