What is Advent?
Advent is the beginning of the Christian year, the four weeks before Christmas spent waiting and preparing for the coming of Christ, both his birth in Bethlehem and his promised return. It is a season of hope kept in the dark, lighting one candle at a time as the light draws near.
In the Word
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
How it is observed
It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, often marked with an Advent wreath and a candle each week.
Advent Sunday is the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day; the date shown is that first Sunday.
