What is the evidence for Christianity?

The short answer

The strongest evidence is historical: Jesus really lived and was crucified, his tomb was found empty, and his disciples were so convinced they had met him alive that they gave their lives to say so. Add the sudden birth of the church, the changed lives across twenty centuries, and the honest, undesigned quality of the Gospel accounts, and you have a case that has persuaded careful minds in every age. It points, in the end, to one man.

Christianity does not float free of history. It hangs on events that happened at a particular time and place, which means it can be weighed. Here, in brief, are the strands most historians take seriously.

The threads of the case

First, Jesus was a real figure of the first century, executed under Pontius Pilate, mentioned even by non-Christian writers of the era. Second, his tomb was empty, a claim his opponents never refuted by simply producing a body. Third, many people, including skeptics and a former persecutor, were convinced they saw him alive, and were transformed from hiding to fearless witness.

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day.”
1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Fourth, the movement exploded in the very city where Jesus was killed, within weeks, at great cost to its followers. People die for what they believe to be true, but these witnesses were in a position to know whether it was true. Fifth, across the centuries, the encounter with Jesus keeps remaking lives in ways that ring true.

It comes back to Jesus

No single strand compels belief, but woven together they point beyond themselves. And they point to a person, not a system. The best way to test the evidence is to read one of the Gospels slowly and meet Jesus for yourself, then ask what could account for a grave that would not stay shut.
