What Does the Bible Say About Guilt?

The Bible takes guilt seriously enough to answer it fully. It does not tell you your guilt is imaginary; it tells you it can be washed away. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us, so guilt that has been brought to Christ has been dealt with for good.

What this means for you today

Guilt that drives you to God is doing its job; guilt that keeps replaying after you have confessed is not from him. Once you have brought a wrong to Christ, it is forgiven, and you can rest in that even when the feeling lingers.

Where you have wronged another person, part of dealing with guilt may be making it right where you can. But your standing before God rests on his forgiveness, not on your ability to undo the past.

The deepest answer is Jesus

Jesus bore our guilt on the cross so that we would not have to carry it forever; the debt he paid does not get billed to us twice.
