Mount Sinai
At Mount Sinai, God descended in fire and cloud to meet a redeemed people and give them His law. Thunder, smoke, and trumpet marked the mountain as holy, forbidden to touch. Here Israel became a covenant nation, bound to the God who had brought them out of Egypt on eagles' wings.

What happened here
Three months after leaving Egypt, Israel camped before Sinai, and the Lord called Moses up to declare His covenant. God descended upon the mountain in fire, and it was wrapped in smoke and shaken while a trumpet sounded long and grew louder. The people were warned not to touch the mountain on pain of death, for the Lord was there in fearful holiness. From the height God spoke the Ten Commandments and gave Moses the pattern of law and worship. Moses went up into the thick darkness where God was, remaining forty days to receive the tables of stone written by the finger of God, along with instructions for the tabernacle. At Sinai a rescued crowd of former slaves was formed into a people under covenant, called to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

Sinai reveals the character of the God who saves. He redeems first, drawing Israel out of Egypt, and only then gives His law, so obedience flows from rescue rather than earning it. The commandments show His holiness and expose human sinfulness, teaching a people what it means to belong to a holy God. Yet the fire and the barrier also declare distance; the people cannot approach, and even Moses trembles. The law is good, but it cannot make the heart new, and Israel breaks the covenant almost at once with the golden calf. Sinai thus points forward, awaiting a covenant written not on stone but on hearts, and a Mediator who can bring near what the law kept at a distance.
How it leads to Christ
The law given at Sinai finds its fulfillment in Christ, who kept it perfectly and bore its curse for those who broke it. Paul contrasts Sinai, the mountain of the law that brings bondage, with the freedom found in the gospel. Where Sinai thundered with fire and warned the people back, Jesus welcomes sinners near, for in Him the barrier is removed. The commandments written in stone are written by the Spirit on the hearts of His people, fulfilling the promise of a new covenant. Moses spent forty days on the mount receiving the law; Christ spent forty days tested in the wilderness and kept every word. He is the greater Mediator, and through His blood the redeemed draw near not to a burning mountain but to the throne of grace.
