The Covenants of the Bible
The Covenants of God, and How Each One Leads to Christ
The Bible is not a loose collection of stories but one story held together by covenants: solemn bonds in which God binds Himself by promise to His people. From the garden in Eden, through Noah and the rainbow, through Abraham and his seed, through Israel at Sinai, through David and his throne, the line runs to a new covenant written on the heart, sealed in the blood of Jesus. Each covenant carries the story of redemption a step further, and each finds its yea and amen in Christ, who is Himself the mediator of a better covenant. Below is each one: the promise, the sign, the fulfillment, and an honest note on how strong the connection is.
The line that runs to the new covenant
Read them in order and you can watch the promise narrow and deepen. Eden poses the problem, a fellowship with God broken by sin. Noah preserves the world so the answer can come. Abraham begins to gather a people through whom all families of the earth will be blessed. Sinai gives that people a law and a way to draw near, and in exposing sin it teaches the need for a Savior. The priestly covenant keeps mediation alive until the true Priest appears. David is given a throne for the coming King. And the new covenant gives, in substance, everything the others promised in shadow: sins remembered no more, God dwelling with His people, His law written on the heart. Every road leads to Christ.
Come and see
The covenants are God keeping His word across the ages, and the word He kept is a Person.
