Revelation 4

Caught up in the Spirit through an open door in heaven, John sees the throne of God. One sits upon it, radiant as jasper and sardine, ringed by an emerald rainbow. Twenty-four elders in white with golden crowns surround Him, and four living creatures full of eyes cry Holy, holy, holy without ceasing. The elders fall down, casting their crowns, worshipping the One who lives forever and created all things for His pleasure.

What happens in Revelation 4

After the letters, a voice like a trumpet calls John up through an open door in heaven to see what must come. At once he is in the Spirit and beholds a throne with One seated upon it, His appearance like brilliant jewels, encircled by an emerald rainbow. Around the throne sit twenty-four elders robed in white, crowned with gold. From the throne come lightnings, thunderings, and voices, and before it burn seven lamps of fire, the seven Spirits of God, above a sea of glass like crystal.

Four living creatures, like a lion, a calf, a man, and an eagle, each with six wings and full of eyes, never rest, crying Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. Whenever they give glory, the twenty-four elders fall down, cast their crowns before the throne, and declare God worthy to receive glory and honour and power, for He created all things.

Revelation 4 in context

With chapter four the vision shifts from earth to heaven, from the churches to the throne that governs history. Everything that follows, the seals, trumpets, and bowls, unfolds under this scene. The imagery echoes Ezekiel's and Isaiah's throne visions and the tabernacle furnishings.

The twenty-four elders likely represent the whole people of God, and the four living creatures the highest orders of creation in worship. Before any judgment falls, John and his readers are anchored in the certainty that God reigns.

Reflection

Heaven's answer to a frightening world is not an explanation but a throne. Before John is shown what will happen, he is shown who reigns. When the future feels like chaos, return here: One sits on the throne, holy and eternal, and every crown falls before Him. Let your worry become worship.
