Nehemiah 12
The chapter lists the priests and Levites who returned from exile and their successors, then describes the joyful dedication of Jerusalem's wall. They march with trumpets, cymbals, harps, and the musical instruments of David, until both companies meet at the house of God. Great sacrifices are offered, and the people rejoice with such joy, including wives and children, that the sound is heard far off. Provisions for priests and Levites are then organized.
Nehemiah 12 in context
This chapter celebrates the climax of the rebuilding: the formal dedication of Jerusalem's wall. The opening genealogies root the current priests and Levites in the line of those who first returned from Babylon, stressing continuity with earlier worship leaders. And the singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer. 43Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off. 44And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited. 45And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son. 46For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God. 47And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.

How Nehemiah 12 points to Jesus
The dedication fills Jerusalem with such thanksgiving that its joy is heard far away, a whole community rejoicing in what God has done for them. This points toward the fuller joy that Christ brings and that fills the city of God. The wall was purified before it could be dedicated; through Christ, God's people and dwelling are cleansed and made fit for his presence, not by ceremonial washing but by his blood.

Why dedicate the wall rather than simply use it?
The wall was a gift from God, accomplished against great opposition, so the people set it apart to him with worship rather than treating it as merely their own achievement. Dedication acknowledged that God had done the work and that the city belonged to him. It turned a construction project into an act of thanksgiving, giving glory where it was due.

Their joy was both exuberant and ordered.
