Leviticus 26
God sets before Israel the blessings of obedience and the curses of rebellion. If they keep his commandments he will give rain, harvest, peace, fruitfulness, and his own dwelling among them. If they refuse, escalating disasters will come: disease, drought, wild beasts, sword, famine, and finally exile among the nations. Yet even then, if they confess and humble their hearts, God will remember his covenant with their fathers.
What happens in Leviticus 26
The LORD forbids idols and commands reverence for his sanctuary. If Israel walks in his statutes, he promises rain in season, abundant harvest, peace, safety from beasts and enemies, fruitfulness, and above all his tabernacle among them: I will walk among you, and will be your God. But if they will not hearken, he warns of terror, disease, and failed crops. If they still refuse, he will punish seven times more, breaking their pride, sending beasts, sword, and pestilence, until the land lies desolate and they are scattered among the heathen.
Then the land will enjoy the sabbaths they denied it. Yet the chapter turns: if they confess their iniquity and their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and accept their punishment, God will remember his covenant with Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham, and remember the land. Even in exile he will not utterly cast them away or break his covenant, for he is the LORD their God.
Leviticus 26 in context
This chapter forms the covenant conclusion of the Holiness Code, following the pattern of ancient covenants that ended with blessings and curses. It sets the terms of Israel's life in the land God is giving them. The prophets later read Israel's history through this chapter, interpreting exile as its curses coming to pass and restoration as its promise of mercy.
Its final word is not judgment but God's stubborn faithfulness to his covenant.

and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. 18And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. 19And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: 20And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. 21And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. 22I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate. 23And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; 24Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. 25And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. 26And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied. 27And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; 28Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. 29And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. 30And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. 31And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours. 32And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it. 33And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste. 34Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths. 35As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it. 36And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. 37And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. 38And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. 39And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. 40If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; How Leviticus 26 points to Jesus
The chapter's crowning promise, I will dwell among you and be your God and you shall be my people, is the heartbeat of Scripture, and it lands in Jesus. John writes that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, literally tabernacled. Paul applies the very words of this chapter to the church, saying God will dwell in them and walk in them, and they shall be his people. The blessings hinged on an obedience Israel could not sustain, and the curses fell as the prophets warned; but Christ perfectly kept the covenant and bore its curse on the tree, that the blessing might come to us.
And Revelation ends where Leviticus aims: the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and be their God. The deepest promise here is fulfilled in him.

Is this chapter teaching that we earn God's blessing by obedience?
Within the old covenant, life in the land was tied to faithfulness, and rebellion brought real consequences. But the chapter itself points beyond mere transaction, for even the disobedient are met with mercy when they humble their hearts. God's final commitment rests on his covenant with the patriarchs, not on flawless performance. The whole arrangement exposes Israel's inability and prepares for the grace fulfilled in Christ, who kept the covenant for us.
What is the greatest blessing God promises here?
Not rain, harvest, or safety, though he promises those, but his own presence: I will set my tabernacle among you, and I will walk among you, and will be your God. Every other blessing serves this one. The goal of the covenant is God dwelling with his people. That promise runs through Scripture to Immanuel, God with us, and to the final vision where God dwells with humanity forever.
Reflection
Strip away the harvests and the victories, and the treasure at the center of this chapter is simply God himself: I will walk among you. That is still the deepest blessing on offer. Not merely gifts from God's hand, but God's own presence with you, made ours in Christ, who came to dwell among us.
