Job 38

The LORD finally answers Job out of the whirlwind, but with questions rather than explanations. He challenges Job to explain the foundations of the earth, the bounds of the sea, the birth of the morning, the storehouses of snow, the courses of the stars, and the feeding of the wild creatures. Where was Job when the world was made, and can he govern what he did not create?

What happens in Job 38

God speaks from the whirlwind, demanding that Job gird up his loins like a man and answer. Where was Job when God laid the foundations of the earth, while the morning stars sang together and the sons of God shouted for joy? Who shut the sea behind doors and said, this far and no further, to its proud waves? Has Job ever commanded the morning or walked in the springs of the sea? God asks whether Job knows where light and darkness dwell, whether he has entered the treasuries of snow and hail reserved for the day of battle, whether he can bind the Pleiades or guide the constellations.

Can Job send the lightning or lift his voice to the clouds? Then God turns to the animals: who provides the lion's prey, and who feeds the young ravens? Question after question exposes the vast world Job neither made nor sustains, governed by a wisdom far beyond him.

Job 38 in context

After chapters of debate, God finally speaks, yet he never explains Job's suffering. Instead he takes Job on a tour of creation, asking questions Job cannot answer. The point is not to crush Job but to relocate him: he is a creature, not the Creator, and the world runs on a wisdom he cannot fathom.
