Ezra 2

This chapter records by name and number the exiles who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel: families, priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, and Solomon's servants. Some could not prove their genealogy and were set aside. The whole assembly numbered over forty-two thousand, besides servants. On arriving, some leaders gave freewill offerings, and the people settled in their cities.

What happens in Ezra 2

The chapter lists the children of the province who returned from captivity to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own city, led by Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and other named leaders. It counts the people of Israel by family, then the men of various towns, then the priests by their houses, the Levites, the singers of Asaph, the gatekeepers, the Nethinim who served the temple, and the children of Solomon's servants. Some who could not show their father's house or their seed, whether they were of Israel, are named, and among the priests, those who could not find their genealogical register are excluded from the priesthood as unclean until a priest could consult Urim and Thummim.

The whole congregation numbers forty-two thousand three hundred sixty, besides servants, singers, and animals. On reaching the temple site, some chief fathers offer freely for the house of God. Then the priests, Levites, people, singers, gatekeepers, and Nethinim settle in their cities.

Ezra 2 in context

This register, paralleled in Nehemiah 7, documents the community that reconstituted Judah around 538 BC. Names and numbers matter here because covenant identity and priestly service depended on verified lineage.

The concern over genealogies and the Urim and Thummim shows a community careful to restore worship rightly. The list is not filler but the roll call of a people God brought home from exile.

which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name: 62These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood. 63And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and with Thummim. 64The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore, 65Beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and there were among them two hundred singing men and singing women. 66Their horses were seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five; 67Their camels, four hundred thirty and five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty. 68And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place: 69They gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pound of silver, and one hundred priests’ garments. 70So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.

Reflection

God brought His people home not as a faceless crowd but as named families, each counted and placed. You are not lost in the mass to Him; He knows your name. And there is a register that matters more than any earthly lineage. Is your name written in the Lamb's book of life through faith in Christ?
