Ezekiel 39
The oracle against Gog runs to its end. God strikes the weapons from Gog's hands, brings him down on the mountains of Israel, and gives his multitude to the birds and beasts. Israel burns the abandoned weapons for years and buries the dead for months to cleanse the land. Through this judgment God makes his name known, and pledges never again to hide his face.
What happens in Ezekiel 39
God repeats his stand against Gog, promising to smite the bow from his hand and the arrows from his fingers, so Gog falls on the open mountains of Israel with all his bands. His body is given to ravenous birds and wild beasts, and fire falls on Magog. The aftermath dominates the chapter. Israel burns Gog's weapons for seven years and spends seven months burying the corpses in a valley renamed Hamon-gog, appointing men to search out remaining bones and cleanse the land.
God then summons the birds and beasts to a great sacrificial feast on the fallen mighty. The purpose is declared: the nations will see God's judgment, and Israel will know the LORD is their God from that day forward. The chapter closes with mercy. God will restore the captivity of Jacob, hide his face no more, and pour out his Spirit on the house of Israel.
Ezekiel 39 in context
This completes the Gog vision begun in chapter thirty-eight, set within Ezekiel's larger message of restoration to exiles in Babylon. The long descriptions of burning weapons and burying the dead underline the totality of the defeat and the cleansing of a defiled land.
The closing verses reach past judgment to the covenant hope that governs the whole book: a regathered people, a revealed God, and an outpoured Spirit. Revelation echoes the summons to the birds in its own final battle imagery.

Thus shall they cleanse the land. 17And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood. 18Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. 19And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. 20Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD. 21And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them. 22So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward. 23And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. 24According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them. 25Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name; 26After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid. 27When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations; 28Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. 29Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Thematic connection
How Ezekiel 39 points to Jesus
The connection to Christ is thematic and sober. The summons to the birds for a great sacrificial feast on the fallen mighty is taken up almost word for word in Revelation, where it accompanies the final victory of the Word of God, the rider called Faithful and True. So this ancient defeat of hostile power foreshadows the total triumph the risen Christ will complete. Even more, the closing promise that God will pour out his Spirit and hide his face no more is fulfilled at Pentecost, when the ascended Christ sends the Spirit to dwell in his people forever.
Where exile felt like the hidden face of God, the gospel answers that in Christ God has turned his face toward us in grace and given his Spirit as the pledge that he will never leave.
Questions about Ezekiel 39
Why so much detail about burning weapons and burying the dead?
The lengthy aftermath drives home the completeness of the victory. Seven years of fuel from abandoned weapons and seven months of burial show an enemy so thoroughly defeated that his war machine becomes firewood and his host becomes a task of cleanup. In Ezekiel's world, unburied bodies also defiled the land, so the burial restores holiness. The details are not morbid; they proclaim that God's deliverance leaves no threat and no defilement standing.
What does the poured out Spirit mean here?
The chapter ends by binding restoration to God's Spirit poured out on his people, with the promise that he will hide his face no more. This is covenant intimacy, not just rescue. The same promise comes to fulfillment when the risen Christ sends the Spirit at Pentecost. God's final answer to exile is not merely a safe land but his own abiding presence within his people.
Reflection
The most painful part of hard seasons is the sense that God has hidden his face. This chapter ends by promising the opposite: the Spirit poured out, the face never hidden again. If you feel forgotten, hear the vow that outlasts every defeat. In Christ God has turned toward you for good and placed his Spirit within to prove it.
