Daniel 5

Belshazzar throws a feast and profanes the sacred vessels taken from Jerusalem's temple, praising idols. A hand appears and writes on the wall. Terrified, the king summons Daniel, who rebukes his pride and reads the words: God has numbered his kingdom, weighed him and found him wanting, and given his realm to the Medes and Persians. That night Belshazzar is slain.

What happens in Daniel 5

Belshazzar hosts a thousand lords and, while drinking, calls for the gold and silver vessels his predecessor took from the temple in Jerusalem. He and his court drink from them while praising gods of gold, silver, and stone. In the same hour, fingers of a human hand write on the plaster wall. The king is terrified, his knees knocking, and his wise men cannot read the writing. The queen recalls Daniel, who interpreted dreams under Nebuchadnezzar.

Daniel refuses the offered rewards, then reproves Belshazzar for failing to humble his heart though he knew how his father was humbled. He has lifted himself against the Lord of heaven. Daniel reads the words: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. God has numbered the kingdom and finished it; the king is weighed and found wanting; his realm is divided among the Medes and Persians. That night Belshazzar is killed, and Darius the Mede takes over.

Daniel 5 in context

Chapter 5 closes the Babylonian court narratives with the empire's last night. Belshazzar ruled as coregent with his father Nabonidus, which explains the offer to make Daniel third in the kingdom. The scene deliberately mirrors chapter 4: the son knew his father's humbling yet repeated the pride.

Its fall fulfills the succession pictured in chapter 2's statue and prepares for the Persian setting of the visions that follow.

1Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. 2Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein. 3Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them. 4They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. 5In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another. 7The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. Reflection

Belshazzar had every warning and still drank from holy cups. Ask whether you are living against light you already possess. The scale is not cruelty; it is honesty about where you stand. Today, rather than wait for handwriting on the wall, bring your account willingly to the God who weighs.
