2 Chronicles 23
In the seventh year Jehoiada the priest organizes the captains, Levites, and people in a covenant, then reveals the hidden boy Joash and crowns him the rightful king. When Athaliah cries treason, she is removed and executed outside the temple. Jehoiada renews the covenant that Judah will be the LORD's people, tears down Baal's temple, restores true worship, and seats the young king on his throne.

After six years hidden, the priest Jehoiada acts. He gathers the captains of hundreds, brings Levites and family heads to Jerusalem, and binds them in covenant. Presenting the king's son, he declares that David's heir shall reign as the LORD promised. He posts armed guards around the temple and the boy, using King David's weapons stored there. They bring out Joash, crown him, give him the testimony, anoint him, and shout, God save the king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, God save the king. 12Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the LORD: 13And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land rejoiced, and sounded with trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason. 14Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the LORD. 15So they laid hands on her; and when she was come to the entering of the horse gate by the king’s house, they slew her there. 16And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD’s people. 17Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 18Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David. 19And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the LORD, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in. 20And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the high gate into the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom. 21And all the people of the land rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword.

Jehoiada the priest risks everything to bring the hidden, rightful king out of concealment and set him on his throne, a picture that finds its fullness in the work of Christ, our great High Priest, who secures and reveals the true King. Here a priest enthrones the son of David; in the gospel the priestly work of Jesus establishes his own everlasting kingdom. The joyful cry, God save the king, and the covenant that the people would be the LORD's, anticipate the day when Christ is openly acknowledged and every knee bows.
Where Athaliah's false reign collapsed the moment the true king appeared, so every usurping power over the human heart falls when Christ is enthroned there. The renewed covenant that Judah belongs to God is fulfilled in the new covenant that makes us his people forever.

Why was Athaliah killed outside the temple?
Jehoiada insisted she not be slain in the house of the LORD, guarding the holy place from bloodshed even in a just execution. The detail reflects deep reverence for God's dwelling. Justice was carried out, but not at the cost of defiling the temple. It shows that zeal for right must still honor the holiness of what belongs to God.
Why does the priest lead this restoration rather than a soldier?
Jehoiada frames the whole event around the temple, the covenant, and true worship, not merely around seizing power. By making a priest the central actor, the Chronicler shows that Judah's renewal is spiritual at its core. The rightful king is restored so that the people may belong to the LORD again, and worship, not politics, is the goal.
