I Feel Behind in Life

If you carry a low, constant sense that everyone else is ahead of you, hitting milestones you have missed, living the life you were supposed to have by now, that feeling is real and it is heavy, and it is also measuring you against a race that does not actually exist. There is no universal timeline you are failing. There is your one life, in its own season, held by a God who is not comparing you to anyone. You are not behind. You are exactly where the road has brought you, and the next step is still yours to take.

Let's name it honestly

Let us name the phantom you are racing. Behind implies a shared schedule everyone agreed to, career, marriage, house, children, success, by certain ages, and life simply does not run on that schedule for most people. The milestones you feel you missed are visible on other people's feeds and invisible in their struggles, so you are comparing your full, honest inside to their edited outside and concluding you lost. But there is no starting gun and no finish line you are failing to reach in time. The sense of being behind is one of the most common and least true feelings there is.

The deeper thirst underneath

Underneath feeling behind is comparison plus a belief that your worth depends on hitting the timeline, so that a missed milestone feels like a moral failure. But let every man prove his own work, the Scripture says, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. Your rejoicing is not meant to come from beating other people's schedule; it comes from your own faithful walk. To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Your season is not late because it does not match someone else's. Seasons are not races. A field is not behind because it flowers in a different month.
