Doomscrolling and Digital Overwhelm. Green pastures beside quiet still waters at golden hour.

You are not too far gone, and you are not alone

Doomscrolling and Digital Overwhelm

Psalm 46:10

If you cannot seem to put the phone down, if you surface from an hour of scrolling more anxious and more depleted than when you started, and yet reach for it again, you are not weak, you are being worked. These feeds are engineered by brilliant people to hold exactly as much of your attention as they can, and doomscrolling, the compulsive intake of bad news and noise, leaves the soul jangled and exhausted. There is a stillness you were made for that no refresh can deliver, and it is closer than the next notification.

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”Psalm 46:10

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”Psalm 46:1

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”Matthew 11:28

“Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.”Psalm 116:7

Let's name it honestly

Let us name what the scroll is really doing. It promises to inform you or numb you, and instead it floods you, leaving a low hum of dread and depletion that feels like being tired and wired at once. It is usually standing in for a real need, to feel less anxious, less bored, less alone, and delivering a thin counterfeit that leaves you emptier. This is not a lecture about a device being evil. It is an honest look at who is actually holding whom. All things are lawful, the Scripture says, but I will not be brought under the power of any. That is the goal, not shame, just refusing to be owned.

The deeper thirst underneath

Under the compulsion is a restlessness the feed cannot cure because the feed is feeding it. The way out is mostly friction and replacement, not heroic willpower: make the phone harder to reach for, and put something real into the space it was filling, presence, quiet, prayer, a walk, a face across a table. And deeper still, the soul was made for a stillness the scroll actively prevents. Be still, and know that I am God, the Psalm says, and the word for still there means to let go, to stop striving, to unclench. Doomscrolling is the opposite of that stillness; it is striving with your thumb. Your soul is starving for the thing the feed keeps interrupting.

The rest Jesus actually offers

Underneath the endless scroll is a hunger for peace and connection that no refresh has ever filled, and Jesus offers the real thing. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, the Psalm says, present in a way no feed can be. Come unto me, He says to the overwhelmed, and I will give you rest, the very rest the algorithm is engineered to deny you. When you put the phone down and turn toward Him and the actual life in front of you, you are not missing out. You are finally showing up. Return unto thy rest, O my soul, the Psalm says. The rest was always a Person, not a feed.

Who is Jesus? · Begin with Jesus · Ask someone to pray with you

Father, I keep reaching for my phone and surfacing more anxious than before, and I do not want to be owned by it. Help me put real friction in the way and real stillness in the space it was filling. Quiet the restlessness I have been scrolling to soothe. Teach me to be still and know that You are God, and to return to the rest that is You. Amen.

Questions people ask

Why can't I stop doomscrolling even though it makes me feel worse?

Because feeds are engineered to capture and hold attention, often by serving alarming or novel content that hooks the brain's threat and reward systems. The compulsion is not simple weakness; it is a designed pull. Noticing that is the first step toward reclaiming your attention with friction and better alternatives.

Is being on my phone constantly a spiritual issue?

It can be, in that anything which quietly rules your attention and crowds out stillness, presence, and rest touches the soul. Scripture warns against being brought under the power of anything (1 Corinthians 6:12) and calls us to a stillness before God (Psalm 46:10) that constant scrolling actively prevents.

What practical steps actually help with digital overwhelm?

Friction and replacement work best: turn off notifications, use grayscale, keep the phone out of reach and out of the bedroom, and set screen-free windows. Then fill the freed space with what genuinely restores you, quiet, prayer, people, rest. Removing access and adding better alternatives beats sheer willpower.
