The Great Philosophers and Christ

For two thousand years Christians have talked with philosophers, not against them. When Paul stood among the thinkers of Athens he quoted their own poets and told them the God they were feeling after had drawn near in Christ (Acts 17). This is a fair-minded guide to the great philosophers, Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, the Stoics, Kant, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Pascal, Camus, Sartre, and to the deep questions they raised. Each thinker is presented honestly, in his own terms, and then set beside the claim of Jesus of Nazareth. Living Bread never needs a philosopher to sound foolish for Christ to be compelling.

Why philosophy and faith belong at the same table

The New Testament is not afraid of philosophy. It warns against being taken captive by empty human systems, and in the same breath says that in Christ ‘are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.’

The pattern of these pages is simple and always the same: state the philosopher’s thought fairly, name where Christianity genuinely agrees, name where it honestly differs, and then show what Christ offers to the very question the thinker raised.
