Jesus, the Bread of Life

When Jesus said ‘I am the bread of life’ (John 6:35), he was saying that he is to the soul what bread is to the body: the thing we cannot finally live without. Bread meets a hunger that comes back every day; Jesus offers a satisfaction that lasts, feeding the deepest hunger of the human heart with himself. Jesus said this just after feeding a hungry crowd with five loaves. They wanted more bread; he pointed them past the meal to himself. Ordinary bread keeps you alive one more day. Jesus calls himself the ‘living bread’ that gives life for ever, and in the same breath speaks of giving his flesh ‘for the life of the world’, quietly pointing toward the cross. It is a claim only God could make: that a person could be the source of eternal life.
