The story

Jesus, worn out from the journey, sat by a well in Samaria. A woman came to draw water, and he asked her for a drink. It was scandalous on several counts, a Jewish man speaking to a Samaritan woman alone. But the conversation went somewhere she never expected.

Jesus knew her whole story, the five husbands, the man who was not her husband, and he named it without flinching and without contempt. He did not use her past to shame her. He used it to show her that he already knew, and stayed anyway. She ran back to the town that had shamed her and told everyone. The searching stopped because she had finally been fully known and fully welcomed.
