What Is the Meaning of Life? A Christian Answer

Here is the Christian answer in one breath: you were made on purpose, by Love, to know God and to love the people around you. You are not an accident, and the ache you feel for meaning is the shape of the One you were made for.

Why the usual answers leave you hungry

Most of us try three answers first. Achievement: if I accomplish enough, I will matter. Pleasure: if I feel enough good things, that will be enough. Being good: if I am decent enough, that will justify me. Each is a wonderful guest and a terrible host. The finish line keeps moving, the morning always comes, and no honest person is ever quite sure they have done enough.

An old book in the Bible, Ecclesiastes, was written by a man who had all of it, and he wrote one word over the whole pile.

“Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”
Ecclesiastes 1:2

Not because those things are evil, but because none of them is heavy enough to be the point. He had found the hunger. He had not yet found the food.

You were made on purpose

Christianity says the hunger is not a design flaw. It is a homing signal. In the first pages of the Bible, a human being is made in the image of God, carrying a dignity that no failure can cancel and no success can earn.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
Genesis 1:27
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him”
Colossians 1:16

For him. You were not made and then left to invent a reason. You were made toward a Person. Augustine put it in a line that has never worn out: you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.

The meaning of life has a face

Christianity does not hand you a theory of meaning. It hands you a Person. Jesus said the life that is really life is to know God, and when asked to name the single greatest thing a human can do, he gave two commands and called them one.

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
John 17:3
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. … And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
Matthew 22:37, 39

That is the meaning of your life in a sentence you could begin to live this afternoon: to be loved by God, and to become someone who loves. This is why Christians say Jesus is not merely a teacher of meaning. He is the meaning, walking around, and finally dying the death we feared so it would not have the last word.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

You do not have to clean yourself up first. You come as you are, and God does the cleaning. If tonight all you can manage is one honest sentence, say it: God, if you are there, I want to know you.

You are welcome to come and see

None of this asks you to pretend, to sign up, or to have it all figured out. The invitation of Jesus was always gentle: come and see. Read his own words, watch what he does with the tired and the hurting, and decide for yourself. The Gospel of John is a kind place to begin, and it costs you nothing but a little quiet and an honest heart.

Frequently asked questions

What is the meaning of life according to Christianity?
You were made on purpose, by God, to know Him and to love the people around you. The Bible says humans are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27) and that the world was made through and for Christ (Colossians 1:16). Meaning is not a formula you achieve alone; it is a relationship you were made for.
Why do success and pleasure not satisfy?
Ecclesiastes describes a man who had wealth, wisdom, and pleasure and still called it all meaningless, because none of those things is heavy enough to be the point of a life. The hunger for meaning is a homing signal pointing toward God, not a flaw to fix.
How do I find my purpose?
Jesus named the greatest purpose as loving God with everything you are and loving the person next to you as yourself (Matthew 22:37 to 39). You can begin that this afternoon: receive God's love, and become someone who loves.
