Jesus speaks these words on the night before His crucifixion, in the upper room, to His closest disciples who are frightened and confused. When Jesus says they know the way to where He is going, the disciple Thomas objects in verse 5, "Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?" Verse 6 is Jesus' answer to that honest question, and it flows straight into verse 7, where He says that to know Him is to know the Father.
