Is Jesus God?

Christians confess that Jesus is fully God and fully human, the eternal Son who became flesh. This is not a claim that there are many gods: Christians are monotheists who believe the one God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The conviction grew from what Jesus said, did, and claimed, and above all from his resurrection.

Jesus forgave sins (which only God can do), accepted worship, spoke of God as his own Father in a unique way, and said things like ‘before Abraham was, I am’ (John 8:58). His first followers, monotheistic Jews, came to worship him, something they would never do for a mere man, and the resurrection sealed their conviction that he was more than a prophet.

One God, not three

This does not mean Christians believe in three gods. The doctrine of the Trinity is that the one God exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one Being, three persons. On the oneness of God, Christianity stands close to Judaism and Islam; it differs in confessing that the one God came among us in Jesus.
