The Thirty Hidden Years

Of Jesus' roughly thirty-three years, only about three were public. The rest, the hidden years in Nazareth, are passed over almost in silence (Luke 2:51-52), a stretch of ordinary work and obscurity. God spent the great majority of his human life unseen, in the unremarkable faithfulness of an ordinary life.

What the silence means
We tend to skip past it, but it is astonishing. Of the roughly thirty-three years God lived a human life, only about the last three were public. The other thirty are almost entirely silent, a handful of verses covering three decades. He grew up in Nazareth, a town so unremarkable that a man could later ask, 'Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?' He learned a trade; the neighbors knew him simply as 'the carpenter.' Day after ordinary day, for decades, the Word made flesh sawed wood, kept the sabbath, obeyed his parents, and was, to everyone around him, nobody in particular.
If we had written the story, we would have cut the hidden years entirely; they look like wasted time, a long delay before the important part. But God did not skip them. He spent the majority of his one earthly life in them, in the silence of ordinary, unseen faithfulness, and the Father's verdict over all those unremarkable years was already, 'in whom I am well pleased,' before a single miracle was performed.
God spent most of his earthly life in obscurity, unseen, ordinary. The hidden years were not the waiting room. They were part of the work.
The silence was never the whole story
Every silence of Jesus ended in a word, a work, or a resurrection. If God feels silent to you right now, you are not necessarily far from him; you may be in a Saturday before a Sunday.
