Is the Bible the word of God?

The short answer

Christians believe the Bible is the word of God: written by real human authors in their own voices, yet breathed out by God so that it carries his truth reliably. The reasons include its unity across many centuries and writers, the way its prophecies and portrait of a suffering rescuer converge on Jesus, and the experience of countless people who find it speaks with a living authority. Its final authority is that it faithfully reveals Christ.

To call the Bible the word of God is not to say it dropped from the sky or that its human authors were mere pens. Scripture describes a partnership: real people writing history, poetry, and letters in their own styles, carried along by God's Spirit so that what resulted is trustworthy and true.

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

Why Christians believe it

One reason is its startling unity: dozens of authors over some fifteen centuries, yet one coherent story converging on Jesus. Another is the way earlier Scripture anticipates him, down to a servant pierced for the sins of many. Another is its enduring power to expose, comfort, and change people who read it honestly, as if a living voice were behind the words.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
2 Timothy 3:16

None of this asks you to check your mind at the door. You can read the Bible, test its claims, and see whether it rings true, which is exactly what it invites.

It comes back to Jesus

The deepest reason Christians trust the Bible as God's word is that it faithfully shows us Jesus, who himself trusted and fulfilled the Scriptures. Its authority is not the authority of a rulebook but of a voice that keeps leading readers to him. Open it, and listen for that voice yourself.
