I Am the Good Shepherd
In the same discourse about the sheepfold, Jesus deepened the picture. He is not only the door but the shepherd, and not a hired hand who runs when danger comes. He declared Himself the good shepherd, the one mark of whose goodness is that He lays down His own life for the sheep. The claim points straight toward the cross.

What Jesus means by it
A good shepherd is measured by what he will spend for the flock. Hired hands flee when the wolf appears, because the sheep are not their own. Jesus says the opposite of Himself: He knows His sheep and they know Him, and He willingly gives His life to protect them. This is love that costs everything, a shepherd who stands between the flock and death and takes the blow Himself. He also speaks of other sheep not of this fold that He must bring, one flock under one shepherd, widening the mercy beyond Israel to the whole world. To be shepherded by Him is to be known personally, called by name, sought when lost, and guarded by One who has already proved His love by dying and rising for those He keeps.
The great I AM behind it
All through Israel's Scriptures God is the shepherd of His people, leading them like a flock, carrying the lambs, seeking the strays. A beloved psalm names the LORD as the shepherd who spares nothing His sheep need. The prophets condemned false shepherds and promised that God Himself would come to shepherd the flock. Behind that promise stands the God who told Moses His name is I AM. When Jesus calls Himself the good shepherd, He steps into the role the Scriptures reserved for God alone, claiming to be the LORD who at last comes in person to gather, feed, and rescue His people at the cost of His own life.
How to receive him
You come to the good shepherd by letting yourself be known and led, which is harder than it sounds. Sheep are not self sufficient. To receive Him is to admit you cannot guide or guard yourself, and to trust the One who laid down His life for you. It begins by hearing His voice, His word, and following, letting Him lead you toward what is good even when the path runs through dark valleys. He does not drive from behind. He goes ahead and calls His own by name. Bring Him your wandering and your fear of the wolf. He has already faced death for you and come through it. Rest in being kept by a shepherd who will not flee, who counts you His own, and who promises that no one can snatch you out of His hand.
