I Am the Bread of Life
This is the first of the great I AM sayings in John, spoken the morning after Jesus fed the five thousand. The crowd chased Him across the lake, hungry for another meal. Instead of more bread, He offered them Himself. He named the deeper hunger under their empty stomachs and claimed to be its only lasting answer.

What Jesus means by it
Bread was the plainest food, the daily necessity no one could live without. By calling Himself the bread of life, Jesus says that His very person meets the deepest need of the soul, the need to be filled and sustained by God. The crowd wanted food that spoils. He points them to Himself as nourishment that outlasts death. To eat this bread is to trust Him, to take Him in, to depend on Him the way a body depends on daily food. He promises that whoever comes to Him will never hunger again, not because appetite disappears, but because the restless craving of the soul finally rests in the One who made it. This is a claim only God could truthfully make.
The great I AM behind it
Israel remembered manna, the bread that fell in the wilderness so a freed people would not starve. The crowd raised exactly that memory, asking for a sign like Moses gave. Jesus answers that the manna was a shadow, and He is the substance. Behind the picture stands the God who called Himself I AM to Moses, the God who fed His people in the desert and gave them His word to live by. Deuteronomy taught that man does not live by bread alone but by every word from God. Jesus gathers that whole story into Himself, claiming to be the true bread come down from heaven, the presence that once fed Israel now standing among them.
How to receive him
You come to this bread not by earning it but by taking it, the way a hungry person receives a meal held out freely. Jesus draws the line plainly: whoever comes to Him will never hunger, and whoever believes in Him will never thirst. Coming and believing are the same motion, turning from every other thing you have tried to fill yourself with and trusting Him to be enough. This is daily, not once. Bread is eaten again each morning, and the soul feeds on Christ through prayer, through His word, through simple dependence. Bring your emptiness honestly. Stop striving to satisfy yourself and let Him satisfy you. He does not turn away the hungry who come. He gives Himself, and in giving Himself He gives everything the soul was made to want.
