How to Start Reading the Bible

If you have never opened the Bible, or tried and got stuck, you are not alone. Here is a simple, pressure-free way to begin and actually keep going.

  1. Do not start on page one

Genesis is a great book, but the story comes into focus in the Gospels. Begin with the life of Jesus, not the beginning of the book.

“In the beginning was the Word ... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”John 1:1, 14, King James Version

  2. Get a readable translation

Choose a clear modern version so the words do not become a barrier. You can appreciate older language later.

  3. Read the Gospel of John or Mark first

These four short books tell who Jesus is and what He did. Read a small section each day.

“Come and see.”John 1:46, King James Version

  4. Keep a simple rhythm

Pick a regular time, even five minutes, and a bookmark. Small and steady wins over big and sporadic.

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”1 Peter 2:2, King James Version

  5. Ask God to help you understand

Before you read, whisper a short prayer asking God to open your eyes. He delights to teach a willing heart.

“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”Psalm 119:18, King James Version

  6. Do not worry about what you do not get

You will not understand everything at first, and that is fine. Hold the hard parts loosely and keep going; clarity grows over time.

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”Psalm 119:130, King James Version

The One who makes this possible: Jesus

The whole reason to open the Bible is to meet Jesus, and He is easy to find there. Start with His life in the Gospels, and you will discover the Bible is not mainly a rulebook but a rescue story, and He is the Rescuer who came for you.

Open the Word whenever you are ready. You can read the Bible here, or let Bible Study walk beside you a passage at a time.

Common questions

I am a complete beginner, where do I start?

Start with the Gospel of John or Mark, which introduce Jesus clearly. Read a short section daily in a modern translation, ask God to help you understand, and do not worry about the parts you do not yet grasp.

What if I do not understand what I read?

That is normal at the start. Hold the hard parts loosely and keep reading; understanding grows over time. A short prayer for insight, and a readable translation, both help a great deal.

How do I keep reading and not give up?

Keep it small and regular, even five minutes at a set time. Begin with the Gospels rather than Genesis, and remember the goal is meeting Jesus, not finishing a checklist.
